Sand Rivers Selous

Selous Reserve – Southern Tanzania

Amidst the vast wildness of the Selous Reserve in southern Tanzania, the fast flowing waters of the Rufiji River shelter countless hippo and crocodiles and one very special safari lodge. Completed in 1984 by Richard Bonham, Sand Rivers Selous embraces its lovely river setting with eight thatched cottages designed in an open expansive style to take advantage of the wild setting and extensive views. With noted service & excellent cuisine, Sand Rivers Selous is a safari destination in itself.

Operated out of Sand Rivers Selous is their 4 night walking safari led by an experienced guide with an armed scout, staying in a fully serviced mobile fly camp with camp staff & support crew. This comes highly recommended – it is one of the great walking safaris of Africa.

Summary: 7 double open fronted cottages built of stone & thatch overlooking the Rufiji River and raised on wooden platforms, each with large en-suite bathrooms and running hot and cold water. There is an imposing mess & lounge aea and a swimming pool set on the banks of the river under a large baobab.

In addition to the lodge, are Rhino House & Kiba Point. Rhino House is a totally private & exclusive one bedroom house close to the main lodge with private dining and activities. Kiba Point is a larger house – for the exclusive use of a party of up to 8 guests with private activities – and is located upstream from the lodge. Each room has its own plunge pool and there is central swimming pool.

Activities:

  • Game drives in open 4WD vehicles
  • walks
  • fly camping (highly recommended)
  • birding
  • fishing (the sporting tiger fish)
  • boating (on the Rufiji River)
  • picnics & bush lunches
  • private game viewing platforms.
