Bazaruto Archipelago – Southern
Mozambique
Along
the historical Mozambican channel, opposite Vilanculos on the mainland,
lie a chain of five islands – Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magarque,
Banque & Santa Carolina. Benguerra Lodge was one of the first
lodges in the Archipelago and has the best location – an island
still with an indigenous forest (which means birdlife around the
lodge) and a deep channel which allows for water activities even
at the lowest spring tide. Access to Benguerra is easy with daily
flights from Johannesburg to Vilanculos and from Vilanculos, a short flight to Benguerra Island.
This is a small, intimate owner-operated lodge with a rich East
African/Arabic feel. The chefs are some of the finest in Mozambique.
Motorised watersports are not allowed – tranquility is more
important.
Benguerra
is barefoot luxury at its very best.
Summary:
The lodge was rebuilt in 2007 – all the rooms were refurbished
and rooms were added – the lodges consists of 16 chalets
just a moment’s walk from the half-moon beach of Benguerra
Bay. The main lodge has a stylish lounge, dining room and library, reception,
gift shop, swimming pool and Wellness Centre. Many of the staff
have been working at the lodge since it first started back in the
1980’s. The lodge exudes all the charm of a real African Safari
Lodge which makes it a perfect accompaniment to any safari.
New to Benguerra are the villas in the grounds of the lodge. Each luxury villa features four en-suite bedrooms, central living area with sala, lounge, bar and dining room, private rim-flow pool overlooking Benguerra Bay and a rooftop terrace with Bedouin shade.
