Coming face to face with the mountain gorillas has been a safari highlight for many of our guests, particularly for those looking for something different. Gorilla trekking has been described by some as the very best safari holiday they have experienced.
Rwanda is ideal for gorilla trekking if you are short of time (up to 3-4 days) and therefore ideal for before or after a safari holiday to Kenya or Tanzania; Uganda works well as part of a longer game viewing safari to the country.
Only 8 people can visit a given gorilla family for one hour per day. There is a briefing at park headquarters before the trek. A ranger and trackers lead the trek and we recommend each person has a porter.
Usually between 2 and 4 hours of hiking; it can be more, it can be less. You are allowed to spend an hour observing the gorillas before a leisurely walk back down to the starting point.
Yes, anyone over the age of 15. It helps if you are moderately fit, but for the very elderly or infirm we can organise stretchers and porters.
Lightweight walking boots with good ankle support and good grip, good quality walking socks, long trousers with gaitors, T-shirt under a long-sleeved shirt, lightweight waterproof jacket (optional), nettle-proof gloves and take a small rucksack, lots of water and a stick. You will need warm clothes for the evenings at the lodges.
